2017 So Cal Championship

NewLogo1The field is now set for the 2017 SCLAX post collegiate SOCAL Championship on Saturday, June 17th. The game’s venue alternates yearly between the North & South Division winners. This year the game will be hosted by 2017 North Division winner Beverly Hills Lacrosse Club.

It was no walk in the park getting here for this talented Beverly Hills squad. As hard as they practiced during last week’s bye nothing could prepare them for today’s battle against an equally talented Newport Breach Lacrosse Club. Newport jumped out to a 1-0 lead but after some back & forth play the quarter ended with Beverly Hills up 3-2. The Bucks lead off the second quarter with two straight scores but Newport kept answering. The quarter ended with the Bucks up 6-4 thanks in part to an 8-4 edge at the faceoff “X” and strong play by close and midfield defenders.

Beverly Hills scored first in the third but Newport ran off two straight to leave them down 7-7 going into the fourth. The won the fourth quarter faceoff and scored at the 18:10 mark to tie the game with a man-up goal. Each team added one more goal so it meant overtime for these two teams for the second time this season. Both teams had a few possessions but neither could find the net. Then on a dead ball out of bounds Beverly Hills put Andrew White back on the field with just 23 seconds left on the clock. Andrew already had a goal and four assists. He started with the ball, circled the crease then drove & dodged two defenders for the winning goal leaving just 12 tics left in the game. It was not enough and Beverly Hills walked away with a 9-8 overtime win.

In the South Division 40 Thieves had defeated San Diego decisively both times they met in the regular season. But San Diego was 5-0 against two really strong South Division teams, Beachcomber (the 2016 Champion) and Quiksilver and we all know how difficult it is to beat a team three times in a row in any sport at any level. So the outcome of this game was certainly not predetermined.

San Diego jumped out to a lead at the end of the first quarter, as long possessions and the Thieves’ inability to clear the ball saw the visitors up 2-1 and looking primed for an upset. But in the second quarter it was all Thieves as Jacksonville’s Dakota Rohlin scored twice leading the Thieves on a 7-2 run. Domination at the faceoff “X” and ground balls gave 40 Thieves all the possession time they needed to get into an offensive rhythm.

But San Diego wasn’t done as they led off the second half with two quick goals bringing the Thieves lead down to 8-6. But that’s as close as they would get as 40 Thieves went on a 5-1 run resulting in a 13-7 victory and a third South Division title in the last four years. The Thieves will travel up to Culver City High School to face the defending SCLAX SOCAL Champion Beverly Hills in a rematch of the 2015 SOCAL fChampionship which they lost in a heartbreaker 13-12. The winner will be at home vs the Nor Cal champion on June 24th.
